PPDA in Football: How to Read Pressing Intensity

PPDA compares opposition passes with defensive actions in a defined area. Learn the ratio and the limits of interpreting pressing from one number.

What PPDA divides

PPDA means passes allowed per defensive action: opposition passes conceded per defensive action by the pressing team. A common version counts opposition passes and the pressing team’s defensive actions outside its own defensive third. The formula is then PPDA = passes allowed / defensive actions.

One official glossary includes fouls, tackles, interceptions, attempts to tackle or contest the ball, and blocked passes as defensive actions for its calculation. But zone boundaries, event lists and collection methods vary across systems; a value without its method is incomplete. First establish the formula used by the source you are comparing.

A numerical example

If a team allows 90 passes in the selected zone and makes 15 defensive actions there, PPDA is 90/15 = 6. With the same 90 passes but 10 actions, the value is 9. Under identical definitions, a lower number means fewer passes allowed per counted action on average, which can align with more active pressure in the measured area.

But a low PPDA by itself does not prove that a team won the ball successfully, denied dangerous passes or controlled the match. The opponent may have played long balls quickly, lost possession more often or completed few counted passes. Score state, opponent strength, possession, the selected zone and tactical approach all affect the value.

How to check context

Compare PPDA over the same periods, competitions and definitions. Check whether the denominator includes attempted or only completed tackles; whether fouls and blocked passes count; where the zone boundary lies; and how set pieces and counterattacks are treated. If there are zero defensive actions, the ratio is not “zero PPDA”—the division is undefined and should be labelled separately.

Read PPDA alongside opposition passes under pressure, ball recoveries, high turnovers and the quality of attacks conceded. The football statistics overview helps distinguish intensity from effectiveness, while the professional match-analysis guide reminds you to connect metrics with the lineup and match scenario.

What it means for a bet

A low value can be a reason to investigate pressing style, not a standalone forecast for goals, corners or a win. High pressure can produce a quick regain or leave space behind the first line; the outcome depends on the opponent and how well it plays out. Read PPDA as a description of past team behavior, not causal proof of a future result.

Record the source and version defining the zone and actions, along with the sample and game states. If two teams were measured using different rules, the comparison is invalid until their definitions are aligned.
