xG and xGA: Comparing Chances Created and Conceded

xG describes a team’s shot quality; xGA describes the chances created against it. Learn how to compare them, calculate xGD and avoid overreading the gap.

Two sides of the chance profile

A team’s xG adds up modelled quality estimates for its shots. xGA, or expected goals against, adds up estimates for the shots its opponents took. xG therefore describes chance creation, while xGA describes chances conceded. They are related views of a match, not two labels for the same statistic. For the basic definition and caveats, see the guide to expected goals against.

If a side records 1.6 xG and 1.1 xGA per match, those figures describe the modelled shot quality in a selected set of games. They do not mean the team must score 1.6 goals or that its next match will contain exactly 2.7 goals. xG is a sum of probabilities assigned to individual shots, not a finished score prediction. The guide to xG and the final score explains why the two can diverge.

What the xGD difference adds

A common calculation is xGD = xG − xGA. A positive value means the team accumulated more modelled attacking shot quality than it allowed over the selected period; a negative value means the reverse. But xGD compresses two dimensions into one. The same difference can describe a high-volume attacking side that also concedes dangerous chances, or a low-event side with smaller xG and even smaller xGA.

Keep the original xG and xGA beside xGD. State whether you are looking at a season total or a per-match average, and use one data model throughout. Providers may count events or build model inputs differently, so matching labels alone do not guarantee comparable numbers.

A careful team comparison

Fix the competition, date range, match count and source first. Compare the same period and note opponent strength, venue, penalties, dismissals and score state. A team that spends long spells behind may attack more while also allowing more attempts; one aggregate does not reveal why the profile differs.

Do not treat xGA as goals conceded or as a goalkeeper save percentage. xGA aggregates model estimates for opponents’ attempts under the selected provider’s method; its inputs and the timing of those inputs depend on the model. The final score also reflects finishing, goalkeeping, blocks and variation. When discussing defending, record how many shots reached the goal and how dangerous they were.

How to use the conclusion

xG, xGA and xGD help describe past matches and frame better questions: does a team create chances, limit opponents, or show a changing profile? That is not enough to recommend a bet. You still need the current price, the exact market, lineup context and a check that the historical sample resembles the upcoming match. No metric guarantees an outcome or removes risk.
